Vin Diesel made his own breaks. Starting in his youth with stage acting and gaining income as a bouncer at New York clubs, his first short film was written and produced by himself. Multi-Facial became a hit at Cannes in 1995 and it was this film rather than his second self-made film, Strays (successful at Sundance), that caught Steven Spielberg's attention, hence a specially written (small) role in Saving Private Ryan and also the role as the excellent Iron Giant's voice. The character of Riddick in Pitch Black brought more recognition and has prompted at least one sequel. Vin is an obvious film action hero as in The Fast and The Furious and xXx, but given the opportunity is also a good actor with intelligence and writing talent to back him up.
