Welcome to Robert Downey Jr's section at WebFantasy.infoRobert Downey Jr. has too often been in the news for the wrong reasons, but has a strong set of performances in film and TV that make us hope he can keep clear of the drugs permanently. He started in big films in supporting cast, playing a variety of roles in different sorts of films in the 80's, including Weird Science and finally making it to the starring role with Molly Ringwald in 1987 in The Pick-up Artist. More diverse roles followed, although many in less than average films, gradually getting better as we get to the 90's. Finally in 1992, Bob found the right part in a good film - as Chaplin. Directed by Richard Attenborough, this showed what Mr Downey was capable of and should have marked a springboard in his career. Better roles did come of this in (mostly) good films throughout the 90s, but nothing outstanding. Then came the role in Ally McBeal in 2000 in which he was excellent and from which he got fired due to very public drug convictions. In 2002, he started getting back into his career and a year later starred as The Singing Detective. Though not a patch on the original British TV drama, it is still a good performance. And then in 2003 we get Gothika - yet another film that doesn't match up to its own hype, but saved from disaster by decent acting. RD still has to prove himself as a consistently good actor in good films despite his record, but he is certainly trying. With some interesting films on the way, including the forthcoming A Scanner Darkly, we will hopefully witness a point in his career where he can show the world that he can be the reliable, excellent actor we want to see.
