Kate Winslet came to people's notice in 1994 in Heavenly Creatures. She was very soon doing period drama as in Sense and Sensibility Jude and Hamlet, but in 1997 got that big role in the big film Titanic (basically a love story set on a ship that sinks...). Immediately following this with Hideous Kinky and providing voice in Faeries, Kate clearly wants to mix the big roles with the interesting - and can do it. In Enigma we get the serious (the real story of cracking the Enigma code, the key to winning WWII), and the quirky in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - a film about erasing memory. At present she has several films announced or in production, so is definitely here to stay.
