Christian Bale started acting young. His first major professional job being to play the American Boy in The Nerd with Rowan Atkinson on the London stage. This led to TV work, notably in Anastasia (with Amy Irving and Olivia De Havilland). So he was already well established when he got his big film break at age 13 playing the lead role in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun. Roles in Kenneth Brannagh's Henry V and as Jim Hawkins in Treasure Island followed. Still in his teens he got the lead role in the popular musical Newsies, followed by Swing Kids. When he got the role of Laurie in Little Women, this marked a successful completion of that most difficult transition from child star to young man star. Only a few years and films later, he was once again the lead - in Metroland. A few more years (including a role as Jesus) and Christian's recognition factor took a step jump up with his portrayal of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho in 2000. More great films, including Reign of Fire and the terrific Equilibrium follow. And now we eagerly await Batman Begins - which certainly has the potential to outclass the other Batman films. With Bale as Batman, he adds one more fascinating character to a long list. And long may he continue to do so.
